Product Description

Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris) is a charming, low‑growing perennial herb celebrated for its medicinal history and its ability to thrive in a wide range of garden conditions. It forms dense mats of bright green foliage, with softly serrated leaves arranged opposite along square stems — a classic trait of the mint family. In summer, the plant produces upright spikes of violet‑purple flowers, each arranged in tight, tiered clusters that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.

The blooms have a distinctive hooded shape, giving the flower spikes a sculptural, almost ornamental look despite the plant’s humble nature. Self Heal spreads gently by creeping stems, creating a lush groundcover that remains attractive even when not in bloom. Long valued in traditional herbal medicine, this species is still appreciated today for its resilience, beauty, and ecological value in pollinator gardens.

Growing Conditions

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soils, from moist loam to average garden soil. Prefers consistent moisture but tolerates brief dry periods once established. Excellent for naturalized areas, herb gardens, pollinator beds, and lawn‑alternative plantings. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering, or allow seed heads to mature for natural spreading. Cold‑hardy, resilient, and easy to grow with minimal care.

Ships in 3" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. Please understand that shipped plants have bumpy rides. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰

Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants.
