Name: Orbea lepida

Scientific Name: Orbea lepida

Family Name: Apocynaceae

Product Description:

They do NOT usually have 6 petals. But they do sometimes because I most certainly took that bloom picture myself on 10-12-2015 at 7:40 EST! 😁

Orbea lepida is a compact, clumping succulent with four‑angled, toothed stems that form tidy mats over time. The stems are green to gray‑green and may develop purple tones in strong light. Its star‑shaped flowers are the highlight of the species—typically maroon to deep red, often patterned or textured, with a glossy surface. Like many stapeliads, blooms may have a faint scent to attract pollinators, though this species is generally milder than others in the group. Its unusual architecture and striking flowers make it a favorite among collectors of stapeliads and rare succulents.

Origination: Native to East Africa

Historic Uses: Ornamental succulent, collector’s specimen

Height: 3–6 inches tall; spreads outward as it grows

Hardiness: USDA Zones 10–12 (very frost‑sensitive)

Flower Color: Maroon to deep red, star‑shaped blooms

Other Names: Stapelia lepida (older classification), Lepida Starfish Flower

Growing Conditions:

Grow in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Prefers very well‑draining, gritty soil and careful watering—allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Protect from frost and prolonged cold. Excellent for containers, collector shelves, and warm indoor spots where its sculptural stems and dramatic blooms can be showcased.

Ships in 3.5" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. Please understand that shipped plants have bumpy rides. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰

Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants. Keep in mind some plants we carry are very tropical and even cold, not freezing, temperatures can kill them. 📌IF YOU EXPECT COLD WEATHER, PLEASE PURCHASE A HEAT PACK! 📌 These are necessary for winter shipping, so I sell them at cost. I won't refund or replace any frozen plants unless you buy one!
