Origanum vulgare, commonly known as oregano, is a bushy, rhizomatous, woody-based perennial that belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region but has naturalized in many parts of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows up to 1-3 feet tall (30-90 cm) and 1-2 feet wide (30-60 cm). Its flowers, which can be white, pink, or light purple, are 3–4 mm (1⁄8–3⁄16 in) long and are produced in erect spikes in summer. It is sometimes called wild marjoram, while its close relative O. majorana is known as sweet marjoram.

Growing Instructions:
Oregano thrives in full sun in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. In terms of hardiness, O. vulgare can survive in USDA hardiness zones 4-10. It is tolerant of drought, deer, rabbit, dry soil, and rocky soil. The plant attracts butterflies and is suitable for beds and borders, patio and containers, and various garden styles including Mediterranean gardens, informal and cottage gardens, and city and courtyard gardens.
