Here are some key details about this plant:DescriptionThis plant has erect, green, 3- to 4-winged branches with a zigzag pattern. The branches can grow up to 6.6 feet (2 meters) tall and 4 inches (10 cm) wide. The spines are gray to brownish, up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, and arranged in pairs. It produces small, yellow flowers that grow in the top of the stems next to each spine. The flowers bloom in spring.Native HabitatNative to the KwaZulu-Natal province and the Northern Provinces of South Africa, as well as Mozambique and Eswatini. Grows in dense dry mixed forest, on granite slopes, and on rocks at elevations of 40 to 700 meters.Care and CultivationPrefers full sun to partial shade. It needs at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Requires well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. A mix of garden soil, perlite, and coarse coconut coir works well. Prefers moderate humidity. Misting with rainwater can help provide foliar feeding. Thrives in warm temperatures between 60-85°F (16-29°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be kept indoors or in a plant house during colder months. Can be propagated through seeds or stem cuttings. Stem cuttings should be planted in a well-draining growing medium and kept in bright, indirect lightShips in the 3.5” pots shown in the pictures. Scientific Name: Euphorbia ammak var. variegata
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Product Description:
Euphorbia ammak 'Variegata', also known as the Variegated African Candelabra, is a striking succulent tree with upright, columnar stems marbled in shades of light green, creamy white, and yellow. Its architectural form and bold coloration make it a standout specimen in xeriscapes and modern gardens. Though it produces small, inconspicuous flowers, its dramatic silhouette and drought tolerance are the main attractions.
Origination: Native to the Arabian Peninsula
Recommended Uses: Ornamental specimen for arid landscapes and large containers
Height: Up to 30 feet in native habitat; 6–8 feet in cultivation
Hardiness: USDA Zones 9–11
Flower Color: Small, yellow-green (not showy)
Maturity: Slow-growing; matures over several years
Other Names: Variegated African Milk Tree, Candelabra Spurge
Growing Instructions:
Euphorbia ammak 'Variegata' thrives best in full sun to partial sun, with bright light helping to enhance its beautiful variegation. It prefers well-draining soil, ideally a cactus or succulent mix, as excess moisture can lead to root rot. Watering should follow the soak-and-dry method—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to mimic its native arid conditions. This plant enjoys warm temperatures ranging from 60 to 85°F and should be protected from frost and cold drafts. During the growing season in spring and summer, a light feeding with diluted cactus fertilizer is beneficial, but over-fertilizing should be avoided.
As a safety note, like many Euphorbias, this plant produces a milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. It's best to handle it with care and keep it out of reach of pets and children.
