Name: Dischidia platyphylla
Scientific Name: Dischidia platyphylla
Family: Apocynaceae
Product Description:
Dischidia platyphylla is a compact, epiphytic vine native to the Philippines, known for its flat, rounded leaves that grow tightly against vertical surfaces in a shingling pattern. The leaves are succulent and smooth, ranging from bright green to gray-green, and often overlap like roof tiles. Beneath each leaf, adventitious roots help anchor the plant to bark or wood. This species has a mutualistic relationship with arboreal ants, which nest inside the hollow leaf bases and provide nutrients through detritus. Flowers are small, white to cream, and appear sporadically under ideal conditions. Its compact form and unusual growth habit make it ideal for mounted displays and terrarium walls.
Origination: Philippines
Historic Uses: Ornamental epiphyte for mounted displays, terrariums, and ant-plant collections
Height: Vines trail or climb up to 3 feet (90 cm)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 11a–12b
Flower Color: White to cream, star-shaped
Maturity: Blooms sporadically in high humidity and bright filtered light
Other Names: Sometimes called “Shingle Plant” or “Helmet Leaf Dischidia”
Growing Instructions:
Dischidia platyphylla thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity (60–80%). Mount on bark or wood slabs to replicate its natural growth habit. Use a well-draining mix of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, coco coir, and perlite. Water when the medium feels dry but avoid soggy conditions. Maintain temperatures between 65–95°F, and mist regularly if grown indoors. Fertilize monthly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Watch for mealybugs and spider mites, especially in dry environments.
