It is a small, geophytic cactus with very tuberous roots that remain mostly buried in the soil, showing only about 1 cm above ground. The stems are grayish-green to brownish, round in cross-section, and can reach up to 6 cm in width and 2-4 cm in height. The stems often retract underground during the dry season. The flowers are 2.5 to 3 cm long and have a larger diameter than the segments, which is why it is sometimes called the \"Rebutia of the Opuntias\". The flowers are usually deep rose-red to purple and bloom during the summer.  Puna subterranea grows in the high Andes plateaus, at altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 3,500 meters above sea level.
